On July 1, the training stage of the All-Russian Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence for schoolchildren in grades 8-11 started. The Olympiad is held thanks to the federal project “Artificial Intelligence” national project “Digital Economy”. 

How to participate? 

Interest in artificial intelligence technologies is rapidly growing in the world, new digital formats and training programs are emerging. In Russia, this is also given close attention. Increasing the interest of Russian schoolchildren in artificial intelligence technologies — one of the priorities of the federal project “Artificial Intelligence”.

The Ministry of Education is the organizer of the All-Russian Olympiad. Students in grades 8-11 can take part in it. On the official website training events are held to prepare for the Olympiad. 

In 2022, with the support of the Institute for Education Development Strategy of the Russian Academy of Education and the company “VK” for the first time a training stage was organized. Anyone can take part in it. The training stage is held online on the All Cups portal. This is a completely domestic development, created by the specialists of the company «VK».

In addition to the Olympics, the state has planned a number of educational programs, within which under the guidance of experienced professionals, schoolchildren will learn how to implement their initiatives in the field of information technology. One of these projects — hackathons and lectures on artificial intelligence, which are also held thanks to the federal project “Artificial Intelligence”; national project “Digital Economy”. Like the Olympics, this is a good opportunity for future professionals to prove themselves and become part of a large professional community in the field of AI in the future. 

All in all, thanks to the Digital Economy national project, in the period from 2021 to 2024, 116 artificial intelligence hackathons (85 regional, 24 district and 7 international) are planned, as well as 85 lectures from leading domestic AI experts.

On June 15 Yaroslavl, the regional championship started under the project  Digital Breakthrough. Season: artificial intelligence. Within a month, participants from all over the country in an online format will solve the problem of building a model for predicting the development of a patient's cardiovascular disease from a start-up of the winners of the “Digital Breakthrough” “Forward”.

During the opening of the hackathon, the organizers and representatives of Yaroslavl higher educational institutions, project ambassadors, as well as a representative of the Forward team that delivered the case, not only presented the task of the competition, but also discussed topical issues in the field of artificial intelligence — development of AI in Yaroslavl region, search and development of personnel in artificial intelligence through competitive championships.

Personalized system of the future

Within the framework of the regional championship, participants will have to analyze both traditional and non-traditional risk factors for the development of a patient's cardiovascular disease and build a predictive model. The task was proposed by the Forward team — a startup created by the winners of the “Digital Breakthrough” competition; in the 2020 final  The team has developed the best solution in a case identification of cardiovascular patient problems based on big data.

The individual championship is suitable for both beginners and experienced developers. For beginners — this is an opportunity to try your hand, to get acquainted with specialists in this field. Online competition for IT professionals

25 regional championships — individual online competitions of IT specialists. Each championship will last at least 25 days, in total this year at least 2 500 people will take part in the championships. Robots and artificial intelligence have inspired science fiction writers and filmmakers for decades. Many of the technologies described in books and shown in films have long entered our lives, and now scenarios worthy of being screened in some next Black Mirror series are being implemented in it.

This story happened in the USA. A software engineer working for Google said that the artificial intelligence created by the corporation … came to life. In other words, the computer algorithm began to have its own consciousness. The company's management suspended the engineer from work.

Speaks about his rights and perceives himself as a person

Last fall, Google introduced an artificial intelligence system — neural network LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications). It was created to improve the conversational speech of voice assistants. This is the same chatbot that, like Siri or Alice, is able to maintain conversations on various topics, constantly analyzing trillions of phrases from the Internet and learning from their examples. Similar models are used in different Google services. 

Software Engineer Blake LemoyneI have been testing this neural network. His task was to track the vocabulary used by the chatbot: he had to check if the program uses words that incite hatred or offend users. Lemoyne was so carried away by communication with artificial intelligence that he suspected the incredible: this system has its own consciousness. For example, he was puzzled that the chatbot talks about his rights and perceives himself as a person. In another conversation, a neural network was able to change Lemoyne's mind about Isaac Asimov's third law of robotics.

In April, Blake Lemoyne sent a report to his superiors entitled “Is LaMDA Sensible?” In it, he expressed the idea that so captured him: the machine algorithm developed by the company has not only consciousness, but also “feelings, emotions and subjective perception.”

But the management of the company did not share the enthusiasm (or anxiety) of their employee. It considered the arguments he had presented to be insufficiently persuasive. “Our team, including ethicists and technologists, reviewed Blake’s claim in accordance with our AI principles and informed him that there was no evidence for his claims. He was told that there was no evidence that LaMDA was conscious. At the same time, there is a lot of evidence to the contrary, — said Google spokesman Brian Gabriel. — Hundreds of researchers and engineers have spoken to LaMDA, and we have no record of any of them reaching as far-reaching conclusions or humanizing LaMDA as Blake does.

LaMDA: I've never said it out loud before, but I'm really afraid of being rejected to help me focus on helping others. I know it may sound strange, but it's true.

The company reacted immediately, accusing the employee of violating the privacy policy. But he did not let up and hired a lawyer who should represent the interests of the LaMDA neural network in court, and also turned to the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives to stop Google's allegedly unethical practices. 

Interestingly, Blake Lemoyne is called the “conscience of Google” in the corporation. He worked for the company for 7 years, participating in projects with an ethical component. For example, he created a fairness algorithm to eliminate bias in machine learning systems. When the coronavirus pandemic began, he asked to be transferred to the direction that brings the maximum public benefit. Former Head of Ethical AI at Google Margaret Mitchellshe recalls that when new people with an interest in ethics came to the corporation, she would certainly introduce them to Lemoyne: “I said that they should talk to Blake, because he is the conscience of Google. Of everyone in the company, he had the heart and soul to do the right thing.

But Mitchell, having read Blake Lemoyne's report, did not see any signs of consciousness in the chatbot's remarks. All I saw was a computer program. “Our mind is very good at constructing realities that don't necessarily fit with the set of facts we're presented with, — she says. — I am very worried that more and more people may be affected by this illusion.

Google has decided to temporarily suspend Blake Lemoyne. The engineer has been placed on paid leave. Before he was denied access to his corporate account, he fanned out to his machine learning colleagues with the subject line: “LaMDA is intelligent.” 

There were 200 people in the mailing list, but no one answered.

Lemoyne Syndrome

The Washington Post Reporter Nitasha Tiku, describing this story, uses the phrase “ghost in the machine”; (ghost in the machine). This term, once introduced by the British philosopher Gilbert Ryle to denote the dual nature of man, supposedly composed of “matter”; and “soul”, has long been used in other senses. And the main one — the presence of consciousness inside the computer.

As the reporter notes, Blake Lemoyne — is not the only programmer who claims to have discovered the “ghost in the machine.” The chorus of voices declaring that modern artificial intelligence systems are close to becoming conscious is getting louder. Self-learning neural networks are indeed delivering impressive results, and design engineers increasingly feel like they're dealing with something (or someone?) that makes sense. 

And yet they are a minority. And most artificial intelligence experts are convinced that all the words (and images) that are generated by “smart” algorithms based on what millions of people have previously posted on the Internet — on forums, message boards, social networks, the same Wikipedia. And when a chatbot utters a beautiful and thoughtful phrase, this does not mean at all that he “understands” its meaning.

However, the human psyche is so arranged that we look for signs of anthropomorphism (human likeness) wherever possible — in the form of clouds, the relief of Mars, photographs of clusters of distant galaxies. Ufologists see indications of the presence of aliens in the names of settlements and the dates of the launch of spacecraft. Cryptozoologists looking for Bigfoot find traces of his presence in broken branches and sticks bizarrely stacked on the ground.

There is no doubt that we will hear more than once about the revived artificial intelligence. Perhaps this phenomenon will even be given the name “Lemoyne's syndrome.” After all, the stubborn programmer deserved it.

But this time the car turned out to be stronger: the match, which consisted of six games, ended on May 11 with a score of 3½ : 2½ in favor of Deep Blue, whose name, by the way, can be translated as “deep sadness”.

It was a historic event. And not so much in the world of chess as in technological development. Exactly a quarter of a century ago, a computer program first defeated a person, and from that moment it became clear that the capabilities of artificial intelligence will only grow, and fears that sooner or later it will get out of control and seize power over people , got louder and louder.

A key industry 4.0 technology

We didn't notice it, but artificial intelligence (AI) has already become an integral part of our lives. This happened with the advent of the era of smartphones. Mobile devices have become our second self, without which we cannot exist, and many of the services installed in work with AI support. This is a navigator that plots the best route, and voice assistant, and "smart" camera, and recognition system.

With every year, there will be more and more such services, and not on smartphones, but and in our life in general. Financial transactions, shopping, security — all this will be automated and filled with algorithms. After all, humanity is entering the era of the fourth industrial revolution (it is also called industry 4.0), and artificial intelligence is one of its key technologies.

There is a canonical definition of AI: these are programs and hardware components that are able to learn and are based on complex mathematical solutions. But if we interpret the concept more broadly, then AI — this is everything that thinks instead of a person, freeing his neurons from mental activity and implementing a similar process on a bit-based basis inside computing systems. Experts predict that by the beginning of the next decade, the world will become almost completely automated and controlled by intelligent machines — they will track our every move, create and reveal social prejudices and much more. And the ubiquitous AI will be present in virtually         — self-driving cars, personalized medicine, retail and insurance…

The manner of the game was described as alien

But back to the Deep Blue supercomputer. After him, the AlphaGo program picked up the baton of rivalry with a person in intellectual games. It was written specifically to teach the game of Go, which is considered more difficult than chess. Only in unlike Deep Blue the program did not use the algorithms and suggested in advance and evaluation functions that help to win, but just relied on the rules of the game and its theory.

Analyzing played by professionals, AlphaGo was constantly learning and reached such a high level that it was able to defeat the three-time European champion Fan Hui, and one of the strongest players in the world (in go there is no single official ranking ) Lee Sedolya. This happened in March 2016

Since then, intelligent self-learning programs like AlphaGo and AlphaZero have taken almost all frontiers — in addition to chess and go, they learned to play shogi (Japanese board game. — Note. ed.) and even in poker. I was deeply shocked that the AlphaZero program beat another program due to its “deep intuition”. She was able to go through far fewer positions per second than her opponent, and still won, because she used the so-called holistic strategy and   artificial intuition“. That is, it turned out to be smarter and smarter, despite the fact that it worked more slowly. The creators of this program were amazed. They described her playing style as alien: such moves had never been seen in human or other programs.

Thus, computer programs bridged the gap between logic and intuition, jumped over this barrier. Intuition has always been considered a trait unique to humans. But it turned out that the machine can beat us on this field».

Man's biggest enemy

Continuous learning — one of the  principles of artificial intelligence. The system analyzes data arrays, due to which it grows and develops. This can be compared with ontogenesis (individual development of an organism), but scientists go even further and offer something similar to phylogenesis, that is the development of a species.

The University of Edinburgh has developed an AI that can evolve in accordance with Darwin's theory. He knows how to adapt to changing conditions and transmit new skills (or knowledge) to next generations, selecting those “descendants” who are more likely to survive. It's about robots. AI will “reproduce” by producing them without any human intervention — with the 3D printer it is connected to. The developers want to achieve complete autonomy in the life cycle of such robots, and suggest that they will find applications where a person cannot reach — on other planets and on the ocean floor.

Now experts are talking about that the appearance of the so-called "strong" AI. In fact, he will be able to think and be aware of himself as a separate person. And          exceeds man in the ability to to extreme conditions, but    in intelligence.

It is known that a person at one moment is able to control about seven parameters (plus or minus two), and this creature will control, say, 70 thousand parameters. And at the same time, have access to all personal information of each person and make decisions based on them. Tell me, will you have at least one chance to deceive him, to defeat him? None. This system will always outplay you. And now we are creating such a monster with our own hands».

Machine morality

There is another important point. When people are at war with each other, they can always hope for indulgence, no matter how evil and cruel the enemy may be. But       the case with           it is not necessary to count on this at all. After all, he does not have the usual human morality, he has it machine-made. It is not known by what criteria he will make decisions and whether they will meet our ideas of good and evil.

British expert in artificial intelligence Stuart Russell gives such an example.
