Don’t fret! The ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel is on the way. ‘The Marvels’ is currently in the works with Brie Larson back as Carol Danvers. Here are the latest updates about the cast, release date, and more.

It’s time to go even higher, even further, and even faster. The highly-anticipated Captain Marvel sequel is coming soon to a theater near you. The film — titled The Marvels — will be the 31st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and part of Phase Four of the MCU.

There’s a bit of a wait for The Marvels, but the film will build off the previous Phase Four films, including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and more. From the release date to what we know about production, HollywoodLife has all the latest news on Captain Marvel 2.

‘The Marvels’ Release Date & Where To Watch

The official release date for The Marvels is February 17, 2023. The film had been previously scheduled to be released on July 8 and November 11, 2022. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sequel was pushed to a 2023 release date.

The Marvels will be released exclusively in theaters. All Marvel movies since Black Widow have had an exclusive theatrical release. The film will be made available on Disney+ at a later date.

Cast & Crew

Brie Larson will be back as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. She returns to the role after her debut as the iconic character in the 2019 film Captain Marvel. Brie has appeared as the character in other MCU films since Captain Marvel, including Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but this will be her second stand-alone Marvel movie.

Brie will be joined by Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau. The adult Monica was introduced in WandaVision. Monica is the daughter of Maria Rambeau, who was played by Lashana Lynch in Captain Marvel.

Iman Vellani will star in The Marvels as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Marvel’s first onscreen Muslim superhero. Her casting was confirmed during Disney Investor Day 2020. She will make her first appearance as the character in the upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, which is set to be released in 2022. The Marvels will pick up after the events of Ms. Marvel.

Zawe Ashton is reportedly playing the villain in The Marvels, according to Deadline. Her casting was announced in February 2021. However, Marvel has yet to confirm the news. The outlet reported that the character Zawe’s playing is unknown, but she is expected to “be the main villain.” Zawe previously starred alongside Marvel stars Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Cox in the Broadway production of Betrayal.

What Will ‘The Marvels’ Be About?

The official synopsis for The Marvels has not been revealed just yet. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. Many assumed that the movie would be titled Captain Marvel 2, but it was revealed in May 2021 that the movie would be officially titled The Marvels.

Given that the film will feature both Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, it’s not a surprise that the movie’s title would be pluralized. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the title change could reflect bigger plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Turns out, The Marvels is also a new comic book series and is a “blanket term to describe superpowered characters inside the Marvel Universe, with the series intended to span the past, present and future of the comic book continuity that got its start back in the late 1930s.” Whether this will be reflected in The Marvels movie remains to be seen.

The Marvels comic is a spinoff of a 1994 comic book series titled Marvels. The series is told from the point of view of photojournalist Phil Shelton and retold “major events” in the Marvel universe.

Director Nia DaCosta, who recently helmed the Candyman remake, did tease that The Marvels “deals with specific, personal, sometimes sad things.” She also noted that she’s had “more [freedom]” than anything else she’s worked on.

The movie will be a continuation of Ms. Marvel, so key elements from the Disney+ series will carry over into the film. Since Monica will play a major role in The Marvels, we’ll get to see her interactions with Carol after the death of Maria. Monica’s mother and Carol’s best friend died of cancer between the Snap and the Blip.

“Little Monica had a relationship with Carol Danvers, and we’ll get to see what happens with that relationship, and how or if, it brings them to the present,” Teyonah told Variety. She also added that The Marvels will give fans an “opportunity to further understand who this woman [Monica] is.”

Production Highlights

Captain Marvel 2 was first confirmed by Marvel Studios in July 2019 at San Diego Comic Con. Development on the sequel started in 2020. Filming back in August 2021 after numerous delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production took place at Pinewood Studios in England, Italy, and Los Angeles.

Prior to and during the filming of The Marvels, Brie has been hitting the gym to stay in shape. The Oscar winner announced in January 2021 that she had a home gym built to get ready for the sequel.

Sharon Stone revealed she thinks the Hollywood industry was set up so every other actress ‘should compete against’ Meryl Streep, in a new interview, and Twitter users had a lot to say about her words.

Sharon Stone, 63, is getting attention on Twitter after she discussed Meryl Streep‘s successful career in the entertainment industry in a new tell-all interview. The actress told Everything Zoomer that although she thinks 72-year-old Meryl “is an amazingly wonderful woman and actress”, she thinks there are other actresses “equally as talented” and they don’t get the same “iconic” status.

“The business was set up that we should all envy and admire Meryl because only Meryl got to be the good one,” she explained to the outlet. “And everyone should compete against Meryl. I think Meryl is an amazingly wonderful woman and actress. But in my opinion, quite frankly, there are other actresses equally as talented as Meryl Streep. The whole Meryl Streep iconography is part of what Hollywood does to women.”

Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma ThompsonJudy DavisOlivia ColmanKate Winslet, for f***’s sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor,” she continued. “I’m a much better villain than Meryl, and I’m sure she’d say so.”

“Meryl was not gonna be good in Basic Instinct or in Casino,” she added. “I would be better. And I know it. And she knows it. But we’re all set up to think that only Meryl is so amazing that when you say her name, it must have been amazing for me to work with her.”

Sharon’s quotes from the interview were posted on Twitter shortly after they went public and it quickly went viral, causing many users to share their own opinions. “I remember the days when they used to disrespect Viola Davis by describing her as the ‘Black Meryl Streep.’ So, I say keep talking Sharon Stone,” one user wrote.

I like Sharon Stone, but she is not on Meryl Streep's level. Meryl and Viola? Same level. Meryl and Sharon? Nah. Viola Davis and Sharon Stone? Sharon's not even close. Kate Winslet and Sharon? Not even on Sharon's best day. https://t.co/IJIK0XEpoh

— FangirlingWhileBlack (@BlackFangirling) June 22, 2021

“Meryl Streep is a near-perfect actress. But the likes of Glenn Close, Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Rooney Mara, Brie Larson, Emily Blunt, Viola Davis, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Kerry Washington and Regina King are just as great on their best day. Sharon Stone is 100% right,” another wrote.

Just catching up in the Sharon Stone thing. Anyway, she's right. Meryl is fantastic, but Hollywood has often used "there's nobody like Meryl" as an excuse to deny equally talented actresses opportunities, especially as they age and/or if they aren't white.

Others disagreed with some of Sharon’s points. “I like Sharon Stone, but she is not on Meryl Streep’s level. Meryl and Viola? Same level. Meryl and Sharon? Nah. Viola Davis and Sharon Stone? Sharon’s not even close. Kate Winslet and Sharon? Not even on Sharon’s best day,” a third user shared.

“I love Sharon Stone & I love Meryl Streep. I think our attention should be on calling out studios, writers, & filmmakers who fail to create enough engaging, challenging, & complex roles for the abundance of iconic actors ‘over a certain age’ that exist,” a fourth user pointed out.

Meryl has yet to publicly respond to Sharon’s comments.

You couldn’t have the Avengers without the Black Panther, and it was with a heavy heart that the Marvel universe lost one of it’s greatest superheroes when Chadwick Boseman died on Aug. 28.

In news the shook every Marvel fan to their core, Chadwick Boseman, best known as bringing King T’Challa to life on the big screen in The Black Panther and three other Marvel movies, died on Friday, August 28th after battling stage four colon cancer. Although Chadwick never spoke publicly about his diagnosis, he worked through his treatment for much of his career starting in 2016, according to the official statement sent out to fans on Twitter.

Shortly after the news of his death, tributes pour in from fans and friends alike, including those who stood alongside him in in the Marvel cinematic universe. Don Cheadle, who played James Rhodes / War Machine alongside Chadwick in three of his Marvel films was the first to pay tribute.

i will miss you, birthday brother. you were always light and love to me. my god … ✌🏿♥️✊🏿 🙅🏿‍♂️ forever and ever … https://t.co/9pORaKZuQN pic.twitter.com/awX3DiTVwn

“I will miss you, birthday brother,” he wrote on Twitter, sharing a special selfie of them together at a stadium event. “You were always light and love to me.” Soon after, Brie Larson, who only starred alongside Chadwick in the final Avengers film as Captain Marvel, posted her tribute on Twitter. “Chadwick was someone who radiated power and peace,” she wrote. “Who stood for so much more than himself. Who took the time to really see how you were doing and gave words of encouragement when you felt unsure…Rest in power and peace my friend.”

“All I have to say is the tragedies amassing this year have only been made more profound by the loss of Chadwick Boseman,” Mark Ruffalo, the behind the Hulk, wrote on Twitter. “What a man, and what an immense talent. Brother, you were one of the all time greats and your greatness was only beginning. Lord love ya. Rest in power, King.” “This is such devastating news. We’re praying for his family,” added Chris Pratt in his tribute. “The world has lost an immeasurable talent and a great person.”

Chris Evans soon followed suit, and tweeted out a number of photos of him and Chadwick together, while writing, “I’m absolutely devastated. This is beyond heartbreaking. Chadwick was special. A true original. He was a deeply committed and constantly curious artist. He had so much amazing work still left to create. I’m endlessly grateful for our friendship. Rest in power, King.”

As for the studio who gave him his super suit, Marvel posted a special tribute to their King of Wakanda. “Our hears are broken and our thoughts are with Chadwick Boseman’s family, Your legacy will live on forever.

Chadwick starred as T’Challa in four Marvel movies. He made his first appearance as the Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, where he fought alongside the likes of Iron Man and the Black Widow. The film was followed by his character’s standalone movie in 2018, and Avengers: Infinity War later that year. His final appearance in the MCU was in Avengers: Endgame, though plans for a second Black Panther movie were in the works at the time of his death.

But Chadwick had other super roles before T’Challa. His career first took off with his portrayals of Black American icons Jackie Robinson in 2013 film  42 and James Brown in 2014’s Get on Up.

A great talent taken far too soon.

Remember that viral photo of Brie Larson smiling by the KarJenners, Paris Jackson, A$AP Rocky and more in a bathroom at the Met Gala? Three years later, Brie explained the hilarious story behind the selfie!

Brie Larson, 30, unfortunately didn’t get to attend the 2020 Met Gala, since it was indefinitely postponed in the wake of a nationwide health crisis. Thankfully, she has already made a memory that’ll last a lifetime: accidentally ending up in one of the most viral photos in Met Gala history! On May 4 — the day the 2020 gala would’ve been held — Brie chose to reflect on this iconic photo and reveal its hilarious backstory after it was snapped at the 2017 Met Gala. It turns out that ending up in Kylie Jenner’s selfie (which also included her sisters Kendall and Kim Kardashian) was not a coordinated stunt.

“Seems like we’re having a #MetBall throwback moment today so I’d to take this time to remind everyone of the year I was trying to wash my hands in the bathroom and ended up in a Kardashian selfie,” Brie captioned the throwback moment, which she shared on Instagram! The Captain Marvel star even conveniently zoomed right in on her face for us, which was plastered with a huge grin. We’d be smiling that big too if we were rubbing shoulders with A$AP Rocky, Paris Jackson, Lily Aldridge, Diddy, Frank OceanLuka Sabbat and even more A-list guests. You can see Brie smiling behind model Slick Woods in the photos below!

Like Brie mentioned, many celebrities are having a “#MetBall throwback moment” on Instagram since they couldn’t share new photos. One of these past attendees was Kylie herself, who used her Instagram Story to reminisce on all her iconic gowns (from Balmain to Alexander Wang) from the past four consecutive years. Meanwhile, Julia Roberts didn’t even share a throwback — instead, she encouraged fans to stay at home by sharing a photo of herself modeling a voluminous tulle gown in the window sill of her apartment’s bathroom!

Although The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City was sadly empty on Monday, the Met Gala was still celebrated online. Anna Wintour and Vogue hosted the “A Moment With The Met” virtual event, and Florence + The Machine even put on a special performance! Hopefully celebrities will be back to sneaking in bathroom selfies at the Met Gala next year, though.

JAY-Z and Beyonce Drop Star-Studded Cinematic “Family Feud” Video

JAY-Z and Beyonce delivered a star-studded cinematic video for “Family Feud.”

The short film-themed cut is what everyone on social media is talking about this weekend after the couple premiered it on TIDAL on Friday night. The stunning visual features some big name stars including Omari Hardwick, Jessica Chastain, Thandie Newton, America Ferrera, Michael B. Jordan, Rashida Jones, Mindy Kaling, Constance Wu, Brie Larson, Rosario Dawson, and many more. This is the first video from the album 4:44 that JAY-Z is making a cameo in and his wife Beyonce and daughter Blue Ivy Carter also appeared in the cut.

The video gets underway with a quote from James Baldwin that reads, “The wretched of the earth do not decide to become extinct, they resolve, on the contrary, to multiply: life is their weapon against life, life all that they have.”

The video begins in a setting dated to the year 2444 which pays homage to the album title and 4 is a significant number for JAY-Z. The storyline chronicles across several generations including the year 2050 where Susan Kelechi Watson plays an older Blue Ivy who was among a group of women who revised the Constitution. “America is a family and the whole family should be free,” Watson said. “It’s like I remember my father saying when I was a little girl: Nobody wins when the family feuds.”

Perhaps the most talked about part of the video is when JAY-Z, Blue Ivy, and Beyonce goes to church and the couple went into the confession booth with Hov on one side and his wife on the other side. The overall theme of the album 4:44 is one of confession with Hov admitting to infidelity and even going public about his mother being a lesbian. We’ve already seen nine other videos from the album and I guess the rap legend saved the best for last.

Watch the video for “Family Feud” by JAY-Z and Beyonce below.
