Nathan Eismont: what awaits the ISS and why Russia needs a new orbital station

Weekly “Argumenty i Fakty” No. 32. Take a check per capita 10/08/2022

During the meeting with the president, the new head of Roskosmos Yuri Borisov confirmed that after 2024 Russia will withdraw from the International Space Station project.

About what awaits the ISS further and for what Russia has a new station, "AiF" spoke with leading researcher at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Nathan Eismont.

Museum at an altitude of 600 km

Dmitry Pisarenko, aif.ru: —     When when do you think will leave ISS?

Nathan Eismont: — Go to 2024  — it's like leaving right now. I'm sure it won't happen abruptly. Firstly, the Russian side must transfer all its competencies related to work on the ISS. Secondly, we ourselves are interested in staying at the station as long as possible. And the Americans are interested in and all other participants. Despite the most difficult geopolitical situation, no tension was felt on the ISS at all. There are excellent relations between everyone.

We will stay at ISS as long as possible. And by the way, I'm not sure that the station will be flooded after 2030

— What will happen to her?

There are proposals to raise the ISS orbit by 150–200 km and leave it there for a long time, for decades. At            the atmosphere will not slow down           it will be required to send a spacecraft every few months, as it is now, to return the fallen altitude to the previous value.

And you can use the station as a museum, take tourists there. After all, this is a unique structure, in which huge resources of mankind have been invested. Why sink it in the ocean? This is a monument of our civilization, it is better to save it for posterity.

—      ISS, our cosmonauts will move to  ROSS (Russian Orbital Service Station), which      is much talked about. But and there is little specifics: according to documents there is no such project, the goals are unclear, the costs — too. Yes and pull will we it

— There are doubts whether plans for the development of our own station will fit into other already approved plans for space activities. You may have to sacrifice something.

The new station will have an orbit with an inclination of 96.9° to the plane of the equator, and supporters of this option say: oh, great, all of Russia will be constantly visible from orbit! Indeed, from the orbit on which the ISS is currently flying (with an inclination of 51.6°), it is impossible to observe zones north of this latitude. But these areas are perfectly viewed by satellites, of which these orbits are so full. These are Earth remote sensing devices, meteorological satellites … Sun-synchronous orbits are overloaded with them, there are even special services that monitor around the clock so that there are no collisions.

Of course, ROSS will fly below these satellites, and collisions do threat   , but the question is what for what purpose is it needed, for what tasks? If for observations of the surface of the Earth, then satellites cope with this. True, we have very few there there only 10, and this is a serious gap, but it is unlikely to fill it with the launch of an orbital station.

With a dream of Mars

— Maybe we don't know everything about the tasks of the new station? Rogozin, being the head of Roskosmos, said that it would look like Picatinny rail — rail fastening system used in small arms. Maybe such a comparison is not in vain?

— Indeed, there is talk of military purpose. But now, again the same, these tasks are perfectly solved by automata. And one thing — to observe from orbit, and completely different — bring weapons there. There is an international treaty according to which it is forbidden to launch weapons into space, and I don't think that anyone would risk violating it. After all, by doing so, he will open the way for others. This is a very delicate balance, and everyone has an interest in keeping it.

— Then what are the arguments in for ROSS? Conducting scientific experiments? But them and ISS was underloaded. The last argument — preservation of the manned flight program.

— Disputes about whether manned spaceflight is needed all the time arise between specialists. Many people involved in science are against it. Why? Because if you look at the scientific results obtained from manned and unmanned programs, the comparison is in in favor of manned, and strongly. If you take the experiments on ISS, for fundamental science there are not particularly outstanding results.

Nevertheless, manned astronautics is needed, and here's why. The thing is that all recent scientific achievements related space exploration — all these dark matter, black holes, exoplanets and gravitational waves are incomprehensible and uninteresting to a person from the street. And here is a man in space — quite another matter. Each of us, regardless of the country in which we live, feels a bit like an inhabitant of space. And                 there             this is important and necessary.

— So manned astronautics serves to promote space research in the broad sense?

— Absolutely, although the word « propaganda» gives off negative. If we want people to support scientific space exploration, we need to launch manned missions too. WhyElon Muskconstantly mentions an expedition to Mars as the ultimate goal? It is customary to laugh at him, but there is a deep meaning in this: it attracts people's attention. And, by the way, our ROSS can play a crucial role in the upcoming expedition to Mars. The point is that without the experience of constant flights in near-Earth orbits we will not be ready for a long flight to Mars and back. We still don much to ensure the safety of such an interplanetary flight.

If we suddenly stop working on orbital stations, the experience gained will be irreversibly lost. Therefore, manned programs need to be continued. Mars still remains a dream, but      the        refuse   refuses  >

Opinions

Yuri Borisov, Director General of Roscosmos.

About ISS:

— If we talk about the timing of the termination of Russia's participation in the ISS project — we declared that we intend to do it not from 2024, but after 2024  In Russian, these are two big differences.

О ROSS:

— The set of technical problems makes us think about the goal of continuing the manned program — about the creation of a Russian station. And this transition — completion of work on ISS and commencement of work on Russian station, — must definitely be synchronized.

Sergey Krikalev, Executive Director of Roscosmos on manned programs.

About ISS:

— After 2024 it could be 2025, 2028, 2030  The exact decision to stop work will be made on the basis of an analysis of its technical condition.

About ROSS:

— Today we are discussing whether a completely new Russian station will be built or we will attach the new station to the old one, and then undock. Now our American partners on ISS offer the possibility of docking, including commercial modules, and using them as a test platform for testing.

Dmitry Rogozin, ex-CEO of Roscosmos.

About ISS:

—  So far, we have government permission to work on ISS until 2024  The United States made a decision before & nbsp; 2030 & nbsp; work there. We estimate until 2030  the station will collapse. Her resource — 15 years.

О ROSS:

— The new station will be akin to a Picatinny rail. This allows you to quickly change some equipment. The outer side of the station, facing the Earth, will be constantly loaded with various spacecraft. They will be able to conduct both conventional visual observation, and in infrared mode, radar mode, see through the night, fogs.

Command of the ISS on Wednesday will pass to Russian cosmonaut Artemyev

The NASA press service said that on Wednesday the command of the station will pass to Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, Interfax reports.

It is reported that a command change ceremony will be held on board the International Space Station, during which the current commander, NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn, will pass the baton to the Russian.

Marshburn himself, along with the crew of the Crew Dragon-3 spacecraft, should return to Earth this week.

Recall that on March 18 Artemiev, along with Denis Matveev and Sergei Korsakov, arrived at the ISS on the S. P. Korolev («Soyuz MS-21»).

Earlier, Director General of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin said that the Russian authorities had already decided when the participation of the Russian side in the ISS project would be terminated. He did not name the exact dates.

We note that, according to experts, the ISS will not be able to function without Russia, so NASA representatives are asking Roscosmos not to leave the project. This was told to AiF.ru by the leading researcher of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nathan Eismont.

Moon for everyone. Why it is not beneficial for anyone to withdraw from space agreements

Weekly “Arguments and Facts” No. 17. The highlight of the program. How import substitution works and what Russia can do on its own 04/27/2022 Story Sanctions against Russia and Russia's retaliatory measures

Geopolitical battles have seriously affected the world astronautics. Contracts and joint projects have been suspended, launches have been stopped.

The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on the Russian space industry. In response, Roskosmos curtailed cooperation at the Kourou cosmodrome, canceled the launches of the British OneWeb satellites and doubts whether it is worth continuing joint work on the ISS.

About how humanity will continue to explore outer space and whether everything will end with “star wars”, “AiF” talked to Nathan Eismont, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Leading Research Fellow of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

There will be no ISS without Russia

Dmitry Pisarenko, AiF: – Natan Andreyevich, which country will suffer the most from these mutual sanctions?

Nathan Eismont: – Space activities are inherently international. Now there are no exclusively American projects, just as there are no French or Russian ones. Why? Yes, because the best is taken from different countries for space research. Everything is done on a competitive basis. For example, an American rover surfs the expanses of Mars, and a Russian device is on board. He got there by competition – as the best in its class. And so it is in any direction of space activity.

Therefore, everyone will suffer. The point is that the results of the research are also used on a competitive basis. The data obtained (by the same rover) are sent to those who are better than others can process and interpret them for the benefit of science. Or take the ISS project. 14 countries participate in it. If the station ceases to exist, not only Russia and the United States, but the entire scientific world will suffer.

Soyuz-Apollo Project (1975) had no scientific goals, only political ones. Photo nasa.gov

– By the way, about the ISS. A year ago, it was announced that we would withdraw from the project in 2025. What will happen to the station later and can we exit earlier, given the international situation?

– Without the participation of Russia, the station will not be able to function at all. The point is not that our cosmonauts have some special competencies or qualifications, but that there is a team working there that acts as a single entity. There is a certain distribution of functions, and if one part of the team leaves its composition, everything will stop.

Despite the fact that Russia announced its withdrawal from the ISS, this does not mean that the extension of the treaty is impossible. By the way, the Americans are asking for this extension – it is clear that they are interested in it. Yes, and so are we. You can get out, but we will hurt ourselves.

– Is it? In recent years, one can only hear that the station has exhausted its resource. Holes are found on it, then cracks.

– I think these incidents are deliberately dramatized. References to the fact that the resource of the ISS has been exhausted, in my opinion (and not only mine), are unconvincing. By promising to withdraw from the project, Roskosmos probably expects to achieve something from the Americans, to get something extra. These conversations are utilitarian.

There are examples showing how long a spacecraft can operate in Earth's orbit. Take the Hubble telescope, which made a breakthrough in astronomy and astrophysics. It has been in orbit since 1990, 8 years longer than the ISS. And is still in excellent condition – its service life has been extended until 2030. Or another example – orbital observatory “Integral”. Russian specialists are involved in this project. It was originally planned that the device would last 2.5 years. But this year marks 20 years since it flies, and all the experimenters are just happy with the results.

The same can be said about the ISS. A huge number of experiments are being carried out at the station. This is a very successful project, all parties are interested in it, and its capabilities should be used to the maximum. The life of the ISS has been extended many times and may be extended further beyond 2030. The station can be transferred to another mode of operation by raising its orbit. This is a unique building in which huge resources have been invested – intellectual and financial. Let me remind you that the ISS is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive object created by man. More than $150 billion has been spent on it. It is no less important that it is an instrument of international cooperation. Practice shows that it is very successfully implemented in space activities. At one time, Soyuz-Apollo became such a project. It was not needed from the point of view of science, but it helped in defusing international tension. The same political component, of course, is in the ISS project. It should not be ignored.

What has accumulated on the moon?

– The launch of “Luna-25” is scheduled for August, which will land in the region of the South Pole of our satellite. Why are we returning to the Moon after 46 years?

– Previous expeditions to the Moon have answered many questions, but even more new ones have emerged. These are fundamental questions related to the origin of the Earth's satellite and its evolution. Imagine, among scientists there is still no consensus on how the Moon was formed. Our plans to return there are connected with the fact that we would like to get answers to these questions. Over the past decades, new devices and tools have appeared, so that the technological possibilities have increased greatly. In addition, the exploration of the Moon will help in the preparation of a future Martian expedition.

– Will it be possible to establish the extraction of valuable resources on the moon? There are calculations that one metallic asteroid that once fell on its surface is able to cover the needs of mankind in nickel for 2 thousand years, and in cobalt – 10 thousand years ahead.

– This is being talked about more and more, but it is still difficult to give a definite answer. The Earth is running out of rare-earth metals, and the Moon can indeed have a lot of them. But we do not know well what has accumulated there since its formation. For this, research is needed, sending new expeditions. It often happens that what seems completely unnecessary can then become very necessary and useful, and even an integral feature of human civilization. So it was with electricity. When it was discovered, no one assumed that it could have at least some applied value. And now we cannot imagine our life without it.

The same with the Moon. There is a fantastic offer – establish helium-3 production on the moon. This isotope is found in abundance in the lunar soil, and on Earth it can be used to carry out the thermonuclear fusion reaction, which is considered to be a source of cheap energy for the future. However, scientists have not yet succeeded in creating such a reactor; this is an unsolved scientific problem. Therefore, now it is impractical to extract lunar helium-3 (it is simply not needed), but it is possible that someday it will become the most valuable resource.

And most of all, they want to find water on the Moon. This is important both for fundamental science and for applied purposes – to organize future expeditions. Regarding the form in which water is contained on the Moon, there are also many ambiguities. & nbsp;

– Will it not turn out that in the future all countries will act separately in space? The Chinese will fly to the moon – they will stake out the plot, the Americans will land on Mars – They say it's their territory. So after all, before the "Star Wars" can get there.

– I hope there will be no wars and conflicts in space. But the issue of space law really worries many participants. So far, the approach is the same as in Antarctica: initially it is the property of all mankind. Nevertheless, questions have already been raised regarding the Moon. There were proposals to form teams of lawyers and discuss how to further develop the Moon so as not to harm each other.

Of course, this should be done now, because later, when conflicts arise, it will be too late. This can be done at the UN site, there is such an organization as COPUOS – Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. It functions successfully, and although disputes arise, they have so far managed to be resolved. Practice shows that it is unprofitable for all participants in space activities to withdraw from such agreements.

Expert: US asks Russia not to withdraw from the ISS project

Without Russian cosmonauts, the International Space Station (ISS) will not be able to function, so NASA representatives are asking Roscosmos not to leave the project. Natan Eismont, a leading researcher at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, expressed the corresponding opinion in an interview with AiF.ru.

whole. There is a certain distribution of functions, and if one part of the team leaves its composition, everything will stop, – the expert explained.

The interlocutor of the publication recalled that a year ago, Roscosmos announced Russia's plans to end its participation in the ISS program from 2025, but this does not mean that the extension of the contract is impossible. According to him, American specialists are interested in this extension.

The International Space Station, as Eismont noted, is a very successful project that all parties need, which means they will try to use its capabilities to the maximum. At the same time, the life of the ISS can be extended even beyond 2030.

“A huge number of experiments are being carried out at the station. This is a unique building in which huge resources have been invested – intellectual and financial. It is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive object created by man, – the scientist summarized.

Ivy Sole – East Lyrics

[verse 1]
Imma rap about how good I am at rapping cuz they told me to
Rap about how bullets make the metaphors real potent
Imma tell you how the bullets make the body into window
Shoot the breeze and shoot the fade and never keep the screens too open
If you ponder it, the trap is just a startup, just some product
And you catching cats or marta, even septa with the starter coat
Cold world but Imma show every single artichokes, the green is reason, and the rhyming and the resolve
When we solve a problem, it’s reaching to the root
And I’m undone, unraveling everything I took as truth
I took for granted living on the east with the hitters
All that hustle in the heartbeat, all that grinding through the grimace
If I could go back, I’d pen a love letter to idlewild
To rama road and harris and the wendy’s on independence
Where it was knocking if you bucking in the trenches til it’s finished
Where I saw that the beauty ain’t real without the grit up in it

[Chorus]
What you know about the east?
All I know is what I’ve seen
It ain’t nothing like the coast
If you know it how I know, you’ll see the forest through the trees

[verse 2]
See I ain’t east east
Just a Presby baby from the west
Went to middle school up north
And went southside for all the rest
You pressing luck and testing my patience asking if I’m from the fo’
If you ever had a question, now you got it from the go
Before the locs before the fro, it was lo on my chest
Spending summer on the pavement marched and played clarinet
See I balled for a minute, but I never got finished
Ambition had my mama driven she had to hit that reset
One semester deep, I started loving being Black
Then we moved again I chucked the deuce and that was that
But 07 was a year that I’ll never forget
Bumping Da Drought everyday in ISS
They gon say that I ain’t from there, and yes I guess that’s true
But I know the eastside like Ella knows the blues
It’s a part of me now, just like it hardened me then
They say you can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you been so

[Outro]
What you know about the east
I don’t know thing
I was there for 5 months 2 weeks and 3 days, all I know is what I’ve seen

What you know about the east
I’ll tell you what I left behind
